When you’re a network marketer you’re going to be taught all kinds of ways to market your business. Many of these techniques are great ways to grow your business and help you reach your goals. However, one technique that I just can’t stand is the 3 foot rule and in this article I’ll tell you why.

The 3 foot rule works like this… talk to anyone and everyone who comes within 3 feet of you about your home based business. That’s right, under this rule you should be talking to people in line at the movies, the grocery store, the dry cleaners, the bank, at PTA meetings, amusement parks, and pretty much everywhere else under the sun.

Now besides the fact that you’d never actually get home if you followed this rule it just seems to me that this is one of the reasons people are so annoyed with network marketers.

Look, when I go to the grocery store I’m going for bread not business. Sure if someone happened to stop me and ask me about my business I’d be happy to talk to them but I have to say if the shoe was on the other foot and some stranger started talking to me in the cereal aisle about residual income I’d think they were absolutely crazy!

Trust me… nobody wants to be in business with a crazy person.

The key my friend is not to talk to everyone under the sun it’s to talk to the right people. Targeted prospecting is always going to be a million times better than talking to random people in a supermarket or wearing a big flashy button that says “Ask me about my business!!!”

So where can you find targeted prospects? Online!

Online marketing is so powerful because it allows you to find tons of people who are actually interested in working from home. So you don’t have to tap strangers on the shoulder and ask them “how do you like your job?”… seriously folks… it’s creepy.

On the internet you can find forums and social groups all dedicated to people who want to find a work at home opportunity. I’ll take talking to 5 super interested people over 100 completely un-interested people every single time.

So stop using the outdated 3 foot rule and other outdated offline methods and get online today. Your prospects are waiting!

This is the story of anyone and everyone who has ever made the decision to work from home. Of course some of the details may be a little different but for the most part we all share the same idea… we love not having a job!

Now you can call me a bum if you want to but it’s true… I never want to have another job again. Since I started my home based business I’m happier and more fulfilled than any job could ever make me.

I started out just like pretty much everyone. I went from school out into the “real world” and very quickly I realized that the real world isn’t all it’s cracked up to be.

I went from being a young person with lots of hopes and dreams to someone who was just beaten down by my long hours, small paycheck and nagging boss. I knew that this wasn’t the life I wanted and it was never going to be.

When I decided to start my own home based business it was really scary. I didn’t know what people were going to think about it. Was I going to be made fun of… would I even really make any money? I just didn’t know.

When I told my friends and family what I was doing some of them were supportive but most of them told me just to find a “real job.”

I must admit that was a very tempting idea, after all when I first got starting working for myself things were a little slow. I still wasn’t completely confident in what I was doing but I knew what I wanted in the end so I kept on going.

After a while I started to get the hang of things and much to my surprise I actually started to have a really good time working my business. It was almost like it wasn’t even work at all. I could work when I wanted to work and have fun when I wanted to have fun.

Now, a couple of years down the road I could not be happier with my decision to start working from home. It hasn’t always been easy but I stuck with it and now I live the life I always wanted when I was younger. I can honestly say that I’m never going to have another job again and I couldn’t be happier!

Asking for referrals is something that almost all successful home businesses or network marketers know they should do. However, it’s also something that most of them don’t do. Why is that? And the more important question is… in 2009 should network marketers still be asking for referrals?

The answer to my second question is a resounding yes! You should always, always, always ask for a referral anytime you’re talking to someone about your home based business. The reason for this is that leads are worth a lot. You can create your own but that takes time and effort or you can buy them but that takes money.

So if you’ve spend money on a lead that turns out to be someone who’s not interested at all that could feel like money down the drain right? Well if you get a few referrals out of the deal you won’t feel like you’ve wasted anything.

Referrals simply help your list of leads multiply. Imagine that you bought a list of a thousand leads. And not a single one of them came into the business. That would stink right? Now imagine that you bought a thousand leads and they each gave you 5 referrals. So you’ve essentially paid for 1000 but you now have 6000 do those odds sound a little better to you?

Now of course not everyone is going to give you a referral. You might not get a single one from some people. However you might get 10 or 15 from someone else!

If you’re not asking for referrals you are simply missing out on thousands and thousands of people every month and out of those numbers chances are a few of them will be interested in your business.

So how do you ask for referrals? It’s really pretty easy. Let’s say you’re talking to Sally and Sally says “thanks but I’m not looking for a home based business right now.”

All you have to say to Sally is… “That’s fine, do you happen to know anyone who might be interested in working from home?”

Now at this point Sally will either say yes or no if she says no just say goodbye. If she says yet get a pen and paper and write down their names and numbers right then and there, say thanks and goodbye to Sally and hang up.

Now when you call Sally’s friends you have an opener all ready.

“Hey Paul this is *say your name* I was just talking to Sally and she said you might be interested in making money from home… is that true?”

It really is as simple as that! Now imagine if you didn’t ask for that referral. Sally would have said no and that would have been the end of it but now you’re talking to Paul! You probably wouldn’t have ever even found Paul if not for Sally.

Start asking for referrals and start expanding your leads and getting more sign ups. The art of asking for a referral may be old but it defiantly still works in today’s network marketing business!

Far too often we complicate things when it comes to our home based business. When are we going to get back to basics and start making the real money?

Network marketing is really very simple. You market a product or service and you find other people who want to market that same product or service. So why is it that we make the idea of network marketing so darn complicated when it’s really very simple?

If you’ve ever called a prospect over the phone without a script and tried to tell them about your network marketing opportunity chances are you had a hard time explaining it. Why is that? I believe it’s because we over complicate the crud out of it.

Look, when you’re talking to someone about your business they always fall in one of two categories: people who want to buy the product and people who want to work from home. If they want to work from home it’s pretty silly to go on and on and on and on about how great your product is because at the end of the day that’s not what really matters.

Of course you should be up front with people and tell them the product. However, what you’ll find is that all people really want to know is… how do I make money myself?

If you can show people how to honestly make money from home it doesn’t matter if you’re marketing the worst product in the world… they’re going to sign up with you! I have seen people make money with company’s that have the dumbest most over prices products out there! And guess what… people just keep on signing up to be in the business!

Don’t over complicate things! Get back to basics!

Your prospect has a problem and you have the solution, it’s really as easy and simple as that. Their problem is that they want to make money from home. Your solution is you have a home based business designed to help them do that. From that point on there really isn’t anything you can do… they either want what you have or they don’t.

Don’t over complicate things when it comes to the “no” either. If you offer someone the chance to work from home and make more money and they turn it down it’s not you… it’s them! They obviously just can’t see the opportunity for what it is. So don’t beat yourself up for it because 9 times out of 10 you did nothing wrong.

Your only job is to present your opportunity to the prospect and after you’ve done that your job is done. If they want it, great! Get them started right away and help them to make money as soon as possible. If they don’t want what you have don’t worry about it. Every “no” is not your fault!

Don’t over complicate your business… get back to basics. This is the best industry in the world and it’s also one of the easiest.

Treat your business not like a “network marketing thing”. Treat it like the CEO of a fortune 500 company would treat their business venture. When you work your business, your business will work for you… believe it!

When you first start working from home (or even if you’ve been doing it for a while) it can be really hard to be disciplined. That’s why you have to train yourself to be successful working from home.

Of course one of the great things about working from home is that you can work when you want to work but some people take that too far. There are going to be times when you have to work even when you don’t want to.

For the work at home newcomer I recommend writing out a weekly schedule and sticking with it. That’s the only way to make sure you’re really going to get enough work done to become really successful.

Now you say: “hey, I signed up for a home based business so I didn’t have to follow a schedule!”

While that may be true, until you get the hang of working for yourself from home you’re going to need some sort of structure otherwise you won’t get nearly enough done each week and you’ll probably fall flat on your face.

When you work at a job you know exactly when and where you’re suppose to be working so as a business owner you will now have to train your brain. Once you get use to working on schedule you can feel free to give yourself a little more freedom because you’ll know just how much work it actually takes.

Think of it this way, when you first learn how to make a recipe you follow it very, very carefully because if you don’t you might mess it up. However, once you’ve made the dish lots of times you will almost never have to look at the actual recipe ever again. It will just become a part of you!

You’ll also have to train yourself to say “no” when people ask you to do things. Take it from me, when you work from home people think you do nothing. Even if you’re really busy some people just won’t get it. They think if you’re at home you must not be doing anything important.

You’ll have to learn to tell those people no because when you have to work you have to work! If you don’t train yourself to tell people no know it will get harder and harder.

Treat your business with respect and use your time wisely. Train yourself to be a great home based business owner and soon it will be second nature and you’ll be incredibly successful.

Who doesn’t love sitting in a comfy chair and watching a little television? I know I do. The problem is however, that watching t.v. won’t make you any money. So what’s the television addicted home based business owner to do?

A great way to rack up a ton of traffic exchange credits is to simply get your laptop and start clicking through the traffic exchange sites one at a time. Since this is something you shouldn’t really have to think about it’s an easy thing to do while watching t.v.

Sure traffic exchanges aren’t the most productive thing in the world but if you’re just going to be watching t.v. anyway they’re better than nothing.

Way to make money number 2: Submit Articles

Submitting articles can be a pretty boring and bland thing to do. However, the good thing about it is that you don’t have to think about it too much. The real work is after all writing the articles and once that’s done you don’t have to think about it that much.

Obviously you’ll have to think a little but for the most part article submission is just doing the same thing on different sites and a lot of copy and paste action.

Way to make money number 3: Request Friends/ Followers

This is one of my all time favorite things to do while watching t.v.

It’s just so easy. Just find people on Myspace or Youtube or any other social networking site that you’d like to network with and request them as a friend. It’s mostly just hitting a bunch of buttons and that can be pretty boring so that’s why it’s a great thing to do while you’re watching t.v.

On Twitter all you have to do is start following a ton of people and most of them will follow you back. So start following people like crazy and pretty soon you’ll have a ton of followers yourself.

We all know the that more friends/ followers you have the bigger your sphere of influence is and that’s always a good thing!

Way to make money number 4: Find Inspiration

It might sound silly but sometimes internet marketers have to get off the internet!

Whether it’s inspiration for an article or a marketing video or a blog post… whatever. Chances are if you’re blocked just taking some time to un-wind and watch a little t.v. will help your creative juices start flowing again. Seriously… try it! Just don’t get bogged down and become a couch potato!

Free Classifieds

There are several different free classified ads sites online the biggest being Craigslist. Simply create your ad for free and submit it to whatever city you want your ad to target.

The only downside to free classifieds is that you’ll have to keep posting your ad over and over so you don’t get the whole “do it once and it lasts forever” thing as the other methods I’ve mentioned. Still, free classified sites can be pretty good at getting you more prospects.
