Now you can call me a bum if you want to but it’s true… I never want to have another job again. Since I started my home based business I’m happier and more fulfilled than any job could ever make me.

I started out just like pretty much everyone. I went from school out into the “real world” and very quickly I realized that the real world isn’t all it’s cracked up to be.

I went from being a young person with lots of hopes and dreams to someone who was just beaten down by my long hours, small paycheck and nagging boss. I knew that this wasn’t the life I wanted and it was never going to be.

When I decided to start my own home based business it was really scary. I didn’t know what people were going to think about it. Was I going to be made fun of… would I even really make any money? I just didn’t know.

When I told my friends and family what I was doing some of them were supportive but most of them told me just to find a “real job.”

I must admit that was a very tempting idea, after all when I first got starting working for myself things were a little slow. I still wasn’t completely confident in what I was doing but I knew what I wanted in the end so I kept on going.

After a while I started to get the hang of things and much to my surprise I actually started to have a really good time working my business. It was almost like it wasn’t even work at all. I could work when I wanted to work and have fun when I wanted to have fun.

Now, a couple of years down the road I could not be happier with my decision to start working from home. The answer to my second question is a resounding yes! You should always, always, always ask for a referral anytime you’re talking to someone about your home based business. The reason for this is that leads are worth a lot. You can create your own but that takes time and effort or you can buy them but that takes money.

So if you’ve spend money on a lead that turns out to be someone who’s not interested at all that could feel like money down the drain right? Well if you get a few referrals out of the deal you won’t feel like you’ve wasted anything.

Referrals simply help your list of leads multiply. Imagine that you bought a list of a thousand leads. And not a single one of them came into the business. That would stink right? Now imagine that you bought a thousand leads and they each gave you 5 referrals. So you’ve essentially paid for 1000 but you now have 6000 do those odds sound a little better to you?

Now of course not everyone is going to give you a referral. You might not get a single one from some people. However you might get 10 or 15 from someone else!

If you’re not asking for referrals you are simply missing out on thousands and thousands of people every month and out of those numbers chances are a few of them will be interested in your business.

So how do you ask for referrals? It’s really pretty easy. Let’s say you’re talking to Sally and Sally says “thanks but I’m not looking for a home based business right now.”

All you have to say to Sally is… “That’s fine, do you happen to know anyone who might be interested in working from home?”

Now at this point Sally will either say yes or no if she says no just say goodbye. If she says yet get a pen and paper and write down their names and numbers right then and there, say thanks and goodbye to Sally and hang up.

Now when you call Sally’s friends you have an opener all ready.

“Hey Paul this is *say your name* I was just talking to Sally and she said you might be interested in making money from home… is that true?”

Of course one of the great things about working from home is that you can work when you want to work but some people take that too far. There are going to be times when you have to work even when you don’t want to.

For the work at home newcomer I recommend writing out a weekly schedule and sticking with it. That’s the only way to make sure you’re really going to get enough work done to become really successful.

You’ll have to learn to tell those people no because when you have to work you have to work! If you don’t train yourself to tell people no know it will get harder and harder.

Best Commute Ever!

When you’ve been working from home for a while it’s easy to forget that for most people getting to work involves getting in the car, rain or shine, and fighting through traffic to get to the office.

For starters she taught me that if I want more friends I have to be a friend myself. How does that apply to business? It taught me to view my prospects, business partners, and venders as my friends. I treat them with respect and in return I get respect back.

Obviously sometimes you have to stop being friends and get down to business. But as a general rule if you treat people like you would treat a friend you’ll get a lot more from the relationship.

I also learned that you have to share.

Share what? Well your time for one thing. You have to treat people like they’re worth your time and effort.

You also should share your knowledge. A lot of people don’t get this and think they should keep all their really, really good secrets to yourself. However, when you give people your best bits of information they’ll learn to trust and value you as someone the want to do business with. It might not pay off right away but it will somewhere down the road.

Share everything you have to share (within reason) and you’ll build business relationships that will last forever and you’ll always have lots of people who want to do business with you.

Another valuable thing I learned in Kindergarten was to take a recess. Not a long one, I’m not saying to take an entire week off. But, an hour here and 30 minutes there.

You’ll find that when you come back from your recess you’ll feel more refreshed and ready to go back to work.

If you do nothing but work, work, work all the time without ever giving yourself a break you’ll end up getting burnt out really quickly and might end up giving up. So don’t go for too long without giving yourself small breaks along the way.

Those are just a few examples of things I learned about my home based business from my kindergarten teacher.

In all honesty when you’re first starting out with internet marketing your budget doesn’t really need to be that big at all. A lot of people will tell you that you need hundreds to effectively market online and that’s just not the case because if you’re doing it right almost all online marketing is free.

This is a great thing for the home business newbie because 99 times out of 100 most people don’t have that much to spend anyway. So they need to use the money they do spend in an effective way.

So what you want to do first and foremost is figure out how much money you can afford to spend every single month. If you have extra one month that’s awesome, but on a normal month to month basis how much can you afford to spend on marketing?

Don’t worry about how big or small the number is… it can be $3000, $300 or even $30 and you can still run a successful online business. So don’t stress out about it. Just pick the dollar amount that’s right for you and stick with it.

Next you’re going to want to list all the different ways that you want to market online. Remember, almost all online marketing is free so even if you have 40 different methods on your list probably less than 5 of them should require a financial investment.

Things like Squidoo, Twitter, Myspace, Facebook, Forums, Youtube, Article Marketing, and Blogs are all free. I don’t have time in this article to explain how each of them work but there is lots of good information all over the internet to teach you how to use each and every one of these!

So since all of those are free what should you spend your money on? Things like PPC perhaps… although PPC (or pay per click) can be really dangerous for the internet marketing newbie because you can end up spending a TON of money and get very little in return. However if you do want to use PPC that’s fine just make sure you have a budget for that.

Other things you can spend money on online are domain names, hosting, and website creation if you don’t already have a website that you like.

Once you’ve made your list write a dollar amount next to each item. That dollar amount will represent your monthly budget for each one of these things. (Hint: “free” should be written next to many things)

Now that you’ve made your monthly budget the only thing you have left to do is stick with it! That can be easier said than done sometimes and you might be tempted to go over budget but try to avoid doing so because when you stay on budget you’ll be less frustrated with your business.

It is when people go off budget, waste a lot of money and still aren’t wealthy that they get frustrated and want to quit.
